Cross-border story: A Facebook friendship helped a Sri Lankan woman become a citizen of India

A Sri Lankan woman traveled to India to wed her six-year-old Facebook friend, who is from Andhra Pradesh, in yet another cross-border love tale. According to Live Hindustan, a sister newspaper of Hindustan Times, Sri Lankan native Shivakumari Vigneshwari, 25, and her Facebook buddy Laxman, 28, exchanged vows on July 20 at a temple in V Kota.

When the pair initially connected on Facebook in 2017, their path toward marriage began. Vigneshwari, who entered India on a tourist visa, planned to fly to Andhra Pradesh on July 8 in order to meet Laxman in person after years of online acquaintance.

Laxman met her in Chennai and subsequently brought her to his house, overwhelmed with delight. The pair married in a lovely ceremony with the approval of Laxman's family.

When word of their marriage swiftly spread on social media, officials decided to file a lawsuit against the pair. The Chittoor district police, acting in compliance with immigration laws, gave Vigneshwari a notice directing her to leave the country prior to the expiration of the visa or submit an application for an extension. The tourist visa for Vigneshwari is due to expire on August 15.

Vigneshwari declared her intention to live with her spouse permanently in India despite the obstacles in her way. She made a request to the Indian government for help in achieving her goal of becoming an Indian citizen.

Y Rishanth Reddy, the district superintendent of police, revealed that Vigneshwari had been apprised of the steps and requirements for gaining Indian citizenship. Based on her marriage to an Indian citizen, he said, she will probably get a visa renewal.

The police provided the couple with some guidance on anticipated future legal complexities. They pushed Laxman and Shivakumari Vigneshwari to properly register their union.
