Days after Prime Minister Modi's visit, the US returns 105 trafficked antiquities to India

A total of 105 artifacts are being returned to India by American officials days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's historic trip to the United States. At the Indian Consulate in New York, a repatriation ceremony was place today.

In terms of their origin in India, the 105 objects that the US gave over during a special repatriation ceremony cover a wide geographic range. 47 of these artifacts may be found in Eastern India, 27 in Southern India, 22 in Central India, 6 in Northern India, and 3 in Western India.

The Hindu, Jain, and Islamic religions are represented by about 50 items, while the remaining ones have cultural importance, according to the Indian Consulate General in New York.

Taranjit Singh Sandhu, the Indian ambassador to the United States, thanked the US side for their remarkable help and coordination, praising, in particular, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and his Anti-Trafficking Unit and the Homeland Security Investigation team.

According to Taranjit Singh Sandhu, "For the people of India, these were not just works of art, but part of their living heritage and culture."

The objects, which date from the second to fourth centuries CE to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries CE, are made of terracotta, stone, metal, and wood. An official statement stated that just about 50 of the items have any connection to religion (Hinduism, Jainism, and Islam), with the remainder having cultural relevance.

The Indian government has been working to recover stolen artifacts that represent the country's rich cultural history. As many as 16 antiques were presented to India by the US side during PM Modi's visit to the US in 2016. During Prime Minister Modi's visit to the US in September 2021, the US handed over more than 157 antiques to India.
