For the first time since 1989, Srinagar organises Muharram processions along a traditional route

The Jammu and Kashmir administration lifted a 1989 restriction that forbade mourners from walking from Gurubazar to Dalgate, thus on Thursday, Muharram processions in Srinagar were carried out along the traditional path for the first time in 34 years.

One such procession was seen moving through the Gurubazar-Dalgate road in a video released by the news agency ANI. In order to prevent any unfortunate incidents, there was a strong security deployment on this particular day, and strict conditions were placed in place.

According to Vijay Kumar, the ADGP for the Kashmir Zone, forces had already been deployed the previous night.

"As soon as the government agreed to approve, we had a thorough meeting. Force has been deployed as of last night, according to Kumar, as reported by ANI.

The militancy in Jammu and Kashmir started in 1989, therefore those who participated were perceived as being "soft" towards the separatist movement. Successive governments in the Valley maintained the restriction.

Despite the ban, local youngsters used to march along these routes on the eighth and tenth of Muharram, prompting the authorities to use force. Additionally, processions were not prohibited in any other areas of the city.
