In Manipur, the CBI takes charge of the investigation and files a FIR

The investigation into the sexual assault case involving three Kuki women who were paraded naked, assaulted, and gang-raped by a mob in Manipur on May 4 was taken over by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday, according to persons acquainted with the situation.

The agency has re-registered the first information report (FIR) submitted by the Manipur police after taking over the investigation, they claimed.

On July 19, about three months after the shocking occurrence, a video showing three women being paraded in their bare bodies went viral, inciting indignation all over the country.

On May 4 in Manipur's Thoubal district, two male family members of the victims were allegedly killed. One of the victims allegedly had been gang-raped.

According to the aforementioned individuals, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) received a referral for the matter from the Union Home Ministry.

The matter was transferred to the CBI, the trial must be time-limited, and it must take place outside of Manipur, according to an affidavit the Centre submitted to the Supreme Court on Thursday.

According to the affidavit submitted by Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla, "the central government considers the offenses like the present one to be too heinous" and "deserve to be taken not only with the seriousness it deserves but justice should be seen to be done so that it has a deterrent effect throughout the nation with respect to crimes against women."
