The head of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), Swati Maliwal, made reference to the murder of a 22-year-old woman in Malviya Nagar on Friday. She claimed that more crimes against women are being committed because there isn't enough to deter attackers, who frequently go unpunished.
Meanwhile, pro-women advocates cited a pervasive patriarchal mentality as the cause of such crimes.
"The lack of deterrence is one of the main causes of such instances (crimes against women... There is no guarantee of punishment, according to Maliwal.
In addition to the lack of resources, she claimed that the cops are not being held accountable.
"Even after the Shraddha case, no high-level gathering was held where the subject was discussed. I've asked the Centre to host one of these meetings.
Maliwal was referring to Shraddha Walkar's murder in May 2022 by her boyfriend Aaftab Poonawala. Walker was allegedly murdered by Poonawala at their rental home in Chhattarpur Pahadi, south Delhi.
In order to avoid being discovered, he then cut the body into pieces and disposed of them in wooded regions in and near south Delhi.
Finally, he was taken into custody on November 12.
Women's rights advocates blamed broader social issues and a lack of sensitization among young males for the recent wave of such events.
