Suryakumar Yadav is a T20 rockstar, but before the WI ODIs, Aakash Chopra delivered a scathing critique of the Team India star

When India plays the West Indies in the three-match One Day International (ODI) series, top-ranked T20I batter Suryakumar Yadav will look to enhance his performance in the 50-over format. India, the defending ODI World Cup champions, is prepared to begin its pre-tournament practice matches against the West Indies. Many players on the Indian team will improve their chances of being selected for the Caribbean World Cup in 2023, from Suryakumar resurrecting his ODI career to Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson trying out for the wicketkeeper position.

Suryakumar is a force in the game's shortest format, but he has struggled to maintain that success in ODIs. Shreyas Iyer's absence from India is already felt, therefore the veteran batsman is expected to bat in position number four for India during the West Indies series. Aakash Chopra, a former cricketer for India, shared his thoughts on superstar Suryakumar ahead of the first ODI between India and the West Indies.

In talking about India's middle-order batsmen, Chopra suggested that if Iyer has trouble finding his form after switching to the white-ball side, Suryakumar might be tried as the No. 4 batter. Iyer had back surgery at the beginning of the year. Due to a reoccurring back injury, the middle order was forced to sit out the whole Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 as well as the World Test Championship final. Iyer plans to return to the Indian team at the Asia Cup.

"You need a backup in case, God forbid, Shreyas Iyer is unavailable or fails to regain his form. In that case, Suryakumar Yadav might be considered as a possible No. 4."
