In response to the controversy surrounding the Holocaust and the Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor film Bawal, Israel's ambassador to India Naor Gilon stated on Friday that while he has not seen the film, the trivialization of the Holocaust should worry everyone. I didn't watch the movie Bawaal and I won't, but based on what I've read, the vocabulary and symbolism were poorly chosen. The trivialization of the Holocaust ought to trouble everyone. I implore anyone who doesn't understand the atrocities of the Holocaust to learn more, the ambassador wrote.
Since the film's OTT release, it has come under fire for using an Auschwitz metaphor to address a relationship issue and for the main characters' use of Hitler's name in lines like "We are all a little like Hitler." Another quote from the film is, "Every relationship has its Auschwitz." While visiting the sights of the Second World War in Europe, the movie's characters fall in love.
The embassy tweeted: "Our embassy is constantly working to spread educational materials on this important subject, and we are open to engaging in conversations with all people to foster a better understanding of the universal lessons derived from the Holocaust."
The Simon Wiesenthal Centre, a Jewish charity, has written to Amazon Prime requesting that it discontinue streaming the film due to its offensive depiction of the Holocaust.
