After he refused to marry her, a woman filed a lawsuit in Kanpur against her lover and eight members of his family, including his deceased aunt and 6-year-old cousin.
The woman said in her complaint that Karan Rajput, a resident of Kanpur's Rawatpur neighborhood, had sexually assaulted her while promising to marry her. He later chose not to wed her, though.
She further claimed in her lawsuit that Karan Rajput assaulted her and stole all of her money as well as other valuables, including her ring, after she confronted him about the betrayal. He then invited her to Kanpur's Eco Village for an agreement.
Upon receiving the allegation, the Rawatpur police station in Kanpur filed a First Information Report (FIR) under many sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including sections 376 (related to sexual assault) and 392 (related to robbery), among others.
Later, after authorities discovered that the accused's aunt had passed away years earlier, the accusations against her were dismissed. After it was learned that the accused's young relative was just six years old, his name was also removed from the FIR.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Vikas Pandey addressed the media regarding the incident and stated, "During the investigation, police found out that the names of the accused's late aunt and his six-year-old cousin are also present in the FIR following which their names were dropped from the FIR."
