The Lok Sabha was warned on Tuesday that drones are being used to smuggle weapons and drugs from Punjab across the border, with 53 such occurrences being discovered in the last three years.
Nisith Pramanik, a minister of state for the union, claimed that smugglers and anti-national groups use drones to transfer weapons and drugs across the Punjab border between India and Pakistan.
In response to a written query, he stated that 53 instances of drones being used to smuggle weapons and drugs had been discovered over the previous three years up until June 30, 2023.
In this regard, according to Pramanik, the government has taken a number of measures, including effective round-the-clock control of the borders by the BSF, surveillance, patrolling, the laying of nakas, and the staffing of observation posts along the International Border.
He claimed that any drone movement is instantly reported to the local police. He continued, "Depth nakas are frequently laid in suspected drone dropping zones."
The general public has been made aware of such UAV and drone activities and their potential security repercussions in border regions. The minister advised them to alert the BSF and the local police about any such operations taking place in the back regions.
According to him, the Anti Rogue Drone Technology Committee (ARDTC) was established by the Home Ministry and is overseen by the DG BSF. Its purpose is to assess the technology available to combat rogue drones and certify its efficacy in doing so.
