An official announced on Friday that the Goa police had detained a guy from Gujarat for allegedly raping a female tourist at a resort in the North Goa village of Assonora.
The assault happened on August 23 and the police detained the 47-year-old suspect, known as Laxman Shiyar, who was also visiting Goa as a tourist, based on the victim's report, he added.
"The accused and the victim had previously become friends after meeting on a flight. The man had recorded the woman's phone number during their talk and afterward called her on the phone, according to Deputy Superintendent of Police Jivba Dalvi.
The victim and the man both traveled to Goa earlier this week. He added, paraphrasing the complaint, "On August 23, he called the woman on her phone and convinced her to visit the resort he was staying at Assonora under the pretense of displaying the advantages there.
The guy raped the victim in his room when she arrived at the resort alone. According to Dalvi, he also threatened her with dire consequences if she told anyone about the incident.
According to him, police teams were assembled in response to the woman's complaint, and the accused was apprehended in North Goa's Thivim village, close to Mapusa town.
The victim's age was not given by the authorities.
About 40 kilometers separate Assonora Village from Panaji.
