Assam will create sub-districts in all council constituencies: Himanta Biswa Sarma  


Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Tuesday that the Assam government will establish "Upa-Jila" (sub-districts) in each constituency for the convenience of the people. Raising the national flag on the coming 77th National Day, Mr. Sarma also said the government would make a decision on the abolition of the districts just before the start of the demarcation exercise.

"We have accepted the demarcation as a reality. To carry out the re-arrangement of the constituencies, much work must be done in the immediate future," he added.

The minister said the state government will start a series of administrative reforms within a month. "We will establish an 'Upa-Jila' (subdistrict) in each constituency with all the infrastructure. An additional deputy commissioner will lead it. This will be done by consensus. public convenience and there is virtually no need to visit county headquarters,” he added.

Sarma hopes that this administrative reform will put an end to many problems, including agitation towards new subdivisions and districts.

"Regarding residential areas that were removed before demarcation, a decision will be made within the next two months," he added. On December 31, 2022, the Assam cabinet decided to merge the four districts with their parents from which they were split and create separate districts. Biswanath with Sonitpur, Hojai with Nagaon, Tamulpur with Baksa, and Bajali with Barpeta were merged.

The decisions to unite the districts come just one day before the Election Commission imposes a ban on the establishment of new administrative units in Assam from 1 January 2023 as the voting committee will conduct the demarcation. state boundaries.

On 11 August the Electoral Commission released its final report on the demarcation in Assam, keeping the seats in Parliament unchanged at 126 and the Lok Sabha constituency at 14. The state has seven seats in the Rajya Sabha. However, the jury modified the nomenclature of one constituency and 19 constituencies of Congress.

The number of council seats reserved for Scheduled Actors has been increased to nine from eight and for Scheduled Tribes from 16 to 19. For the Lok Sabha constituency, two seats are proposed in the category. ST and a chair for the SC community.

During the central celebration held at the playground of the Khanapara Veterinary College in the state capital, the State Premier announced that the government would soon begin the process of recruiting 22,000 people in various departments.

He also said that the service for all teachers who have passed Tet will soon be regularized and ensure the arrangement of teachers in schools located in remote and difficult areas. Referring to a recent report by an expert committee on the state's authority to enact polygamy laws, Sarma said a "rigorous law" would soon be passed to end the marriage practice in Assam.

Speaking of corruption, he said a total of 127 government officials have been arrested so far for allegedly giving and receiving bribes.

"The process of removing them from services is ongoing. At the end of the government's term, we will try to root out corruption from Assam," Sarma said.
