Four workers were trapped under the rubble in Mhasobawadi in the Pune district on Tuesday night after the interior wall of a well that was still being built collapsed. According to Pune rural police officials, victims are still trapped in the rubble after the police and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team's search and rescue effort, which started on Tuesday night, was suspended on Wednesday evening.
Thursday morning will see the restart of the rescue effort.
According to police officials, rescue operations were hampered by ongoing soil erosion and loose rocks tumbling into the well.
Somnath Laxman Gaikwad (35) and Javed Akbar Mulani (35) from Sidhdeshwar Nimbodi village in Baramati tehsil, as well as Parshuram Bansilal Chavan (30) and Manoj Maruti Sawant (40) from Belwadi in Indapur tehsil, have been named as the victims by the police.
The police claim that Vijay Ambadas Kshirsagar's property near Kawadewasti in Mhasobawadi in the Indapur tehsil has been actively engaged in well-digging activity for the past four months. Four people were sent to work on the project by the contractor Kshirsagar assigned to it. A piece of the inner wall of the well was being built after the digging was finished when the soil fell in, trapping the construction workers beneath the rubble.
According to Anand Bhoite, additional superintendent of police for Pune Rural Police, "The tragedy was only discovered after the workers' families informed the contractor that they had not arrived home. The group then hurriedly arrived at the construction site.
When the contractor informed the police of the event, a team from the NDRF sped over to the scene and started the rescue effort. There is a video of the incident that shows how serious the situation was and the attempts made to free the trapped workers.
It would take hours to clear the rubble using machinery because the well is 120 feet broad and 85 feet deep, according to Assistant Inspector Dilip Pawar of the Bhigwan Police Station. To expedite the procedure, four machines are employed.
