The Kuki People's Union on Sunday withdrew its support for N Biren Singh's government in Manipur. The announcement was made by the party in a letter.
The party of two MPs notified Governor Anusuiya Uikey in a letter of its withdrawal of support. The letter states that the party believes that continuing to support the outgoing government of N Biren Singh is no longer effective. They further stated that the KPA's support for the Manipur government had been withdrawn and should be considered null and void. The general secretary of the Kuki People's Union, WL Hangshing, confirmed to the ANI news agency that he would withdraw his support for the government.
However, this move may not have much impact on the stability of the BJP government in the state. The BJP has 32 MPs in the 60-member National Assembly. He also received the support of 7 MPs from the National People's Party and 5 MPs from the Naga People's Front. In addition to these two parties, three independents also support the state government led by Biren Singh. The state, which is steeped in ethnic tensions, has seen multiple murders in the past 24 hours. Saturday saw 6 deaths and mortar attacks were reported from the Bishnupur-Churachandpur border.
The violence in the state began after a "tribal solidarity march" was organized to protest the demands of the Meitei community majority for scheduled caste status. Even the visit of Interior Minister Amit Shah could not defuse the situation. In its latest initiative, the Center deployed an additional 900 staff members to the state to restore and maintain law and order in the state. There have been 40,000 military and paramilitary personnel deployed in the state since the violence broke out on May 3.
