Due to an ankle injury, Australia batsman Glenn Maxwell will not play in the South Africa white-ball series. The ODI World Cup 2023, which will be held in India in the months of October and November, will be played just before Maxwell's injury. This is a big setback for Australia, who lost Glenn Maxwell following the T20 World Cup 2022 after he injured his leg due to an accident.
After the three-match Twenty20 series, which gets underway in Durban on Wednesday, Maxwell was already planning to fly back to Australia to give birth to his first kid, but he worsened his ankle injury during a training session.
"Following scans, and on medical advice, it was determined to take a conservative approach," the team stated in a news statement. Maxwell will not play in the three-match T20 series as a result.
The three one-day internationals in India next month, Australia's final matches before the 50-over World Cup in the same nation, will be scrutinized, according to selector Tony Dodemaide.
All-rounder Glenn Maxwell, who is injured, has been replaced in Australia's limited-overs squad by veteran wicketkeeper-batsman Matthew Wade, the team announced on Monday.
After the T20 series, Australia will play South Africa in five ODIs.
Many months after his last test and ODI, Wade assisted Australia in winning the T20 World Cup in 2021.
Wadey, a 35-year-old Tasmanian, "is a world-class performer and is fit and ready to go," according to Dodemaide.
Australia will announce its preliminary team for the ODI World Cup the following week.
