Education becomes first target of violence: Around 14,000 children displaced due to ethnic violence in Manipur

On Wednesday, the Ministry of Education said that more than 14,000 children have been displaced due to the ethnic conflict in Manipur.

More than 93% of these children, according to Union Minister of State for Education Annapurna Devi, have been admitted to the neighborhood school.

In order to assist the 14,763 school-age children who have been compelled to leave their homes due to the current Manipur situation, a nodal person has been assigned to each relief camp, according to Devi.

Up to 93.5% of the displaced students have received free admission to the closest practicable school, according to the government.

Since ethnic riots started in Manipur on May 3, when a "Tribal Solidarity March" was held in the hill regions to oppose the Meitei community's desire for Scheduled Tribe (ST) classification, more than 160 people have died and hundreds have been injured.

The continued violence in the BJP-run state has sparked a dispute between the opposition parties and the central administration led by the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP).

Leaders of the recently formed opposition alliance, the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), have asked that Prime Minister Narendra Modi address the matter on the parliamentary floor.
