In Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh, a police case has been opened against a former leader of the BJP's youth wing after a video of him reportedly threatening and abusing a police sub-inspector (S-I) surfaced on social media last week.
After the video went viral online, Amit Thakur, the party's district vice president in Farrukhabad, was fired for "tarnishing" the party's reputation.
The S-I who was threatened, according to the police, went to the scene in response to a report of a fight and ensuing gunfire between two illegal mining gangs.
"We have filed a police report against Amit Thakur and other people. According to Farrukhabad SP Vikas Kumar, the Special Operation Group and other police teams are conducting raids to apprehend the suspects. The charges against the suspects include violating sections 147 (rioting), 504 (insult intended to provoke breach of peace), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 332 (voluntarily causing harm to prevent a public servant from performing his duties).
Additionally, Thakur and the other three suspects each have financial rewards of $15,000 from the police, SP said.
According to S-I Surjit Kumar, who was threatened by Thakur, he and a constable went to the Central Jail Intersection on the Etawah-Bareilly Highway because they had heard there had been a fight between two groups on the evening of August 21.
One of the two groups attacked the police official when he tried to moderate the situation by interjecting. Thakur is heard saying in the video, "Yeh Mulayam Singh ki sarkar nahi hain, daroga ji. Yes, the Bharatiya Janata Party has a spokesman. dunga bhoot main tumhara... (This is not the administration of Mulayam Singh. The Bharatiya Janata Party is in power at the moment. We'll pound you into submission.
The three other defendants in the case, in addition to Thakur, are Ashish Pratap Singh, aka Sachin, from Amritpur, Manu Chaturvedi, and Anshul Mishra (both from the district's Kotwali area).
