Officials said two policemen and seven civilians were injured when a fire broke out at a factory in the Mayapuri area west of Delhi early Wednesday morning.
Officials said a call came in at 2:05 a.m. that there was a fire at a two-story sofa factory in a popular market for scrap metal.
The fire was extinguished by five bidders who were dispatched to the scene, they said.
The fire broke out in the carton of the sofa spring. A box of glue left on the ground floor also exploded in the fire, a fire official said. Seven men suffered minor burns and were taken to DDU Hospital.
The injured were identified as Rakesh, 35, Ram Niwas, 60, Santosh, 27, Harichand, 35, Vikrant, 25, Kishan, 23, and Inderjeet, 33. Police chiefs Randhir Singh and Vikrant were also burned in the incident, fire officials said.
According to the police, the factory sold the iron springs (used in the production of sofas) to Mayapuri Phase II.
A crime squad was called to the scene to investigate the fire. A case is being registered at the Mayapuri police station, the police added.
