The start of this year has been difficult for thousands of technicians around the world. From Meta and Google to other tech companies, many employees have been laid off to cut costs. An IANS report showed that an average of 3,000 technicians were laid off every day in January. While reports now indicate that tech layoffs are finally slowing down, the impact is still being felt by those who learned of their layoffs months ago.
One such Meta employee, who was informed of her dismissal in May of this year along with 6,000 others, took to LinkedIn and shared her experience. The woman mentioned how she was not only one of the top performers in the company but was also amongst the few people who were appreciated by CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
Meta employee on losing job
Talking about her role at Meta at the beginning of her post, she wrote, “The last time that I shared an update on LinkedIn, I found what I thought might be my next long-term role and a big step in my career:
I joined Meta (Facebook) as a Product Marketing Manager.”
She then added that at the time of her joining, she had no idea that Meta would be entering its most 'tumultuous' years in the next couple of months.
“It (Meta) struggled to create a new identity and restructure its portfolio of products and organization.”
Sharing how she got laid off and that her non-working period and tenure have now ended, the woman wrote, “A year and a half later, I was laid off along with 6,000 of my colleagues in the last wave of the 21,000 employees impacted during multiple rounds of Meta layoffs that began last November. This month, my non-working period and tenure came to an end."
She then added that she was 'cautiously optimistic' that she would be retained since she was working on several important projects and was a top performer at the company. Not only this, she also got a congratulatory note from CEO Mark Zuckerberg. "I knew layoffs were imminent, but I remained cautiously optimistic as I was working on high-priority products at the time, which were rated as high-performing year after year. first and is leading a cross-functional team through a difficult launch and building growth initiatives for a series of key new products that will be available across our entire application pool After a particularly rigorous initial launch period, I was part of a small group that was honored to receive congratulations from Mark Zuckerberg.
"I don't think I'm untouchable, but I have reason to believe I have a good chance of being kept. And then I was fired, one out of 21,000 people, some with years of seniority, some with years of experience. working on popular productions, some being top performers and some somewhere in between,” she wrote.
How do the laid-off people feel? Many technicians have previously described their layoffs as completely random. And that's exactly how this former Meta employee feels.
She wrote: "It all seemed so random at the time, and if I'm telling the truth, I still am. I came to the wrong place, at the wrong time, it's hard to accept when you're always thinking about the ten steps I've chosen." . see this as an opportunity to work on something new, make a difference, and take on new challenges with new teams.
