Government postpones import license requirements for laptops and tablets until November 1  

 


On Friday, the Center decided to delay the fulfillment of the import licensing request for laptops, tablets, and personal computers until November 1, 2023. This came a few hours later. when Reuters reported that the government had pushed back the order for at least a month.

On Thursday, the government announced that the requirement for a license to import laptops, tablets, and personal computers would apply effective immediately. However, the decision was reviewed and implementation was postponed to allow more time for stakeholders to adapt to the new regulations.

According to the notice issued by the Ministry of Trade and Industry on Friday, import shipments can be cleared until October 31, 2023, without a limited import permit. After November 1, a valid Restricted Import Permit is required to import these items.

Deputy Minister of IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar said there will be a transition period for the new standards on importing laptops and tablets to take effect. He said the exact date will be announced soon.

The licensing request was introduced as part of measures aimed at addressing various trade-related concerns.
