Haryana authorities continue Wednesday demolition campaign against 'illegal' construction in Nuh, hit by violence

As part of riot control measures, Haryana authorities on Sunday, the fourth day of the demolition operation, demolished the Sahara Family Restaurant in Nuh amid tight security to avoid clashes.

According to the county government, the Sahara Hotel was built illegally and during recent riots in the area, thugs threw stones at the building. The government is investigating the community violence that began in the district on July 31 and has spread to Gurgaon and other parts of southern Haryana.

Earlier on Saturday, more than a dozen stores, including pharmacies, were destroyed by the county government.

Officials said that following the encroachment on public property, migrant shacks in Tauru, 20 kilometers from Nuh, were demolished earlier this week. Authorities said the owners of some of the shops and houses destroyed were involved in the latest scuffles.

Up to 60 structures were destroyed in different locations. Fear of being caught causes many to flee.

Three days of bulldozer activity in Nuh is said to have been used to target illegal encroachments that have been difficult to eradicate for years.

Six people were killed in community clashes that broke out in Nuh on Monday, including two housekeepers and a cleric. Violence escalated in the evening and around midnight, a mosque was set on fire, and more than a hundred vehicles were vandalized and set on fire in Nuh and the nearby town of Gurugram.

Anil Vij, Haryana's interior minister, claimed there was 'a grand plan' behind the violence but also rejected opposition claims that there had been a failure of intelligence agencies. Police Superintendent Nuh said he had yet to uncover any evidence of the mastermind behind the riots.
