Health update from former WB CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee 

 


Woodlands Hospital CEO and CEO Dr. Rupali Basu said former West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee continued non-invasive life support on Sunday. The 79-year-old leader is said to remain awake and actively dealing with medical professionals and visitors.

A news agency cited a press release as saying his general health remained stable. The statement further mentioned that his arterial line was removed in the morning. Bhattacharjee is currently undergoing testing on her home BIPAP machine. Also, he is at Ryles and a swallowing assessment is underway.

Bhattacharjee was taken to hospital on July 29 due to difficulty breathing. Subsequent diagnosis revealed lower respiratory tract infection and “type 2” respiratory failure. He has struggled with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease as well as other age-related health problems.

Bhattacharjee served as the Minister of West Bengal from 2000 to 2011. He is the 7th CM of the state. Bhattacharjee's defeat in the 2011 elections ended the 34-year term of the ruling Left Front in West Bengal.

During his tenure, charges were brought against him regarding the acquisition of industrial land, led by the incumbent Minister, Mamata Banerjee. His declining health has kept him out of public view in recent years. Bhattacharjee chose to be detained in her two-room government residence for the same reason. His last public appearance surprised party members, as he unexpectedly joined a leftist rally at the Kolkata Brigade Parade ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. with an oxygen spectator.

In 2022, he is said to have given up all leadership positions, choosing to retain his core party membership. However, Bhattacharjee continues to hold a prominent position as a senior official in CPI(M).
