Joel Chetty, a football coach who lives in Malad West, was duped into losing $19.87 lakh as a result of an online scam. On WhatsApp, he received a phony message promising him a part-time position. The sender of the mail appeared to be Neha, who claimed to be employed by Digital Osian, L.L.C. India. They described a position wherein applicants would be required to subscribe to a YouTube channel, take screenshots of it, and send the corporation those images.
According to a Free Press Journal story, 28-year-old Joel consented to take the position since he thought so. The con artist then emailed him a link via Telegram and requested his UPI ID along with his personal and financial information.Â
Joel initially received Rs 150 for doing a duty, and then he received Rs 2800 for a task worth Rs 2000. The scammer then sought Rs 40,000 for a task order and demanded $19,000 to construct an account.
Joel was duped by several justifications and ultimately sent the con artists a total of Rs 9,87,620 between August 16 and August 21. He didn't understand he had been duped until he told his sister about the circumstances.
Joel took action and complained about the three unknown offenders. According to sections 66(c) and 66(d) of the Information Technology Act, as well as sections 34, 419, and 420 of the IPC Act, he has accused them of cheating. The incident serves as a reminder of the risks of online fraud and the necessity of exercising caution while disclosing personal and financial information online.
This episode should serve as a warning to everyone to be leery of unforeseen employment offers and requests for personal information, especially when they arrive via unsolicited texts. It's important to confirm the legitimacy of such contacts and to avoid revealing sensitive information without doing so.
