Mumbai court allows Leander Paes to plead guilty in Rhea Pillai domestic abuse case

A Mumbai Magistrates Court on Monday granted former tennis player Leander Paes' claim for 'tolerating delays' in filing an appeal against a court order against a judge in a domestic violence case filed by his ex-partner Rhea Pillai.

The court granted his request on condition that he pay Rhea Pillai Rs 20,000 within one month.

Delay tolerance refers to an exception where a court or other authority cannot deny a party's appeal on the grounds of a delay in filing the claim.

In February 2022, the Magistrates Court ruled that Paes committed multiple acts of domestic violence against Pillai and ordered him to pay a monthly child support payment of Rs 10,000.

The court also ordered Paes to pay Rs 50,000 monthly rent to Pillai on condition that she leave her apartment in the Carter Road area, Bandra West within two months. In November of last year, Paes filed an application with the Court of Arbitration asking for the lower court's order to be set aside and set aside.

He also filed a request to apologize for the delay in filing an appeal against the court order issued in February 2022.

Pillai countered this plea, saying he "didn't have any good and real reason" to justify the 7-month delay in filing the appeal.

The statutory time limit for filing an appeal is 30 days under section 29 of the Domestic Violence Protection Act 2005.
