The Supreme Court on Friday arrested the Uttar Pradesh government led by Yogi-Adityanath over the killing of politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf in police custody on April 15, observed 'someone complicit' in the hearing.
The bench of two judges of the highest court, including Judges S Ravindra Bhat and Aravind Kumar, also ordered the Uttar Pradesh government to submit a detailed situation report, including details of the killings in Clashes, investigation status, indictment filed and trial status, within six 183 weeks there were 183 "police encounters" in the state.
"There were between five and 10 people protecting him (Atiq)... How could someone come and shoot? How did this happen? Someone was complicit," press agency PTI said. quoted the Supreme Court. According to state police data, up to 183 people have been killed in clashes with police since Yogi Adityanath took power in March 2017.
The court also consulted with the UP government following the plea of Atiq Ahmed's sister Aisha Noori, who asked the highest court to request an investigation into the murders of Atiq Ahmed and 'Ashraf. .
Earlier, in an affidavit dated July 2023, the Uttar Pradesh government told the highest court that the state "is making every effort to ensure a thorough, fair and thorough investigation and timely" about the murders of Atiq Ahmed and Ashraf.
The affidavit also describes reforms initiated by the UP government to modernize police stations and implement all directives issued by the Judiciary Committee B.S. Chauhan on the installation of CCTV cameras in police stations.
