A techie from Bengaluru lost Rs 64,000 in a recent cyber fraud instance while looking for a rental home online. In the Whitfield neighborhood of the city, the victim was looking for properties on numerous well-known rental property websites. She discovered during her investigation that she had been duped and that an unauthorized withdrawal had been made from her bank account.
The victim, who resides in Whitefield's IPB International Tech Park Bangalore, is a software engineer by trade, according to a Times Now report on the incident. On August 17, while searching for a new apartment to rent, she stumbled upon images of a residence she loved. She called the number listed in the web ad to request more information.
Preetam answered the phone when she called, introducing himself as the owner of the apartment and offering to rent it to her. He also said that his manager, Anupam Singh, would get in touch with the victim to discuss the agreement's future. In her complaint, the woman further mentioned that Singh had called her later and requested money for a deposit and other formalities.
The victim accepted and sent the money, believing it to be a valid call and arrangement. However, Singh called her again a short while later and requested that she send the money once more, explaining that the first payment had failed due to a technical issue. This time, the caller's repeated requests for money made the victim wary of the call. He was questioned by her, but he ended the call.
Later, after realizing she had been duped, the victim lodged a complaint. Even though there have been examples of false flat postings and con artists tricking individuals into paying deposits, it is crucial to be on the lookout for these situations.
