On April 22 last year, Jharkhand High Court granted Lalu Yadav bail in the case. The 75-year-old leader of the RJD was sentenced to 5 years in prison and fined by a special CBI court in Ranchi Rs 60,000, in connection with the embezzlement of more than Rs 139 crore from the Doranda treasury.
In her response submitted to the Supreme Court, Lalu Yadav said the Jharkhand High Court's order to suspend her sentence cannot be challenged solely on the grounds that the CBI is not satisfied.
A bench of three judges headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud on August 25 will hear the CBI's petition to annul bail issued by the Jharkhand High Court to Lalu Yadav in a case from the Doranda Treasury involving fraudulent fodder. Given his weak health and advanced age, Lalu Yadav in his response said there would be no reason to detain him.
He said there was no need to interfere with the Supreme Court's order because it was based on general principles and unified rules.
In the fodder fraud case, Lalu Yadav was convicted by the CBI court in Ranchi on February 15, 2022. On February 21, he was sentenced to 5 years in prison and fined Rs 60 lakh.
The 75-year-old RJD leader held Bihar's undivided financial portfolio, of which he was prime minister, during the scam. Lalu Yadav is accused of accepting bribes through the Department of Livestock Production. The issued fake invoices and receipts were cleared by the finance department and the funds were transferred to the treasury.
The RJD cardinal was previously sentenced to 14 years in prison in four other cases involving the Dumka, Deoghar, and Chaibasa treasury in Jharkhand.
