The downpour in Himachal killed 7 people, the Beas River rose again; landslide hit Uttarakhand  


An official said seven people were killed after heavy rains hit the village of Solan in Himachal Pradesh.

The incident happened in Jadon village on Sunday night. Divisional Commissioner Solan Manmohan Sharma said six people had been rescued.

The downpour came even as heavy rain continued to pelt Himachal Pradesh and neighboring Uttarakhand over the past 24 hours, with landslides blocking important roads, washing away bridges, forcing teaching facilities to close, and raising the river level.

In Himachal Pradesh, a private bus driver was injured after a tree uprooted and fell on a vehicle in Shimla. Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has announced that all schools and colleges in the state will be closed until August 14 (Monday) due to incessant rain.

A total of 621 roads including up to 236 roads in Mandi, 59 roads in Shimla, and 40 roads in Bilaspur district are currently closed to traffic, according to the state's emergency operations center.

Officials say a key part of the Shimla-Kalka national highway connecting Shimla and Chandigarh has suffered from recurrent landslides in the past two weeks.

Incessant rains over the past 48 hours have devastated all parts of Hamirpur district, leading to flooding on the Beas River and its tributaries. The hardest hit areas are those with Maan and Kunah nullah, officials said. Rain and landslides have caused great damage to crops, fertile land, and official and private buildings in all parts of Hamirpur. The county government has warned residents not to venture outside and to avoid getting close to the banks of the Beas River and the nullahs.

Since the monsoon began in Himachal Pradesh on June 24, the hilly state has suffered losses of up to Rs 7,020 crore and 257 people have been killed in related incidents, the emergency operations center said. related to rain and traffic accidents.

The weather bureau has issued a yellow warning for heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning in isolated parts of the state from August 14 to 17 and predicts a spell of rain in the state to last through August 19.

In Uttarakhand, landslides caused by heavy rains have blocked traffic on many roads, including the national highway, affecting people's mobility, officials said. The Rishikesh-Chamba trunk road was blocked by landslides near Kunjapuri Bagardhar in Tehri while heavy vehicle traffic was stalled on the Rishikesh-Devprayag-Srinagar trunk road in Sakhnidhar.

The Ganga River at Haridwar is flowing above a dangerous landmark at an altitude of 294.90 meters.
