A 12th grader was murdered by family members in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, because of her relationship with a man from another community, police said.
Police said family members rushed to bury Afreen's body at dawn on August 5 and told neighbors she died of illness.
After that, the girl's body was exhumed by order of the district official and sent for an autopsy. Police said it was an honor killing.
On August 4, a video of Afreen's father and brother beating her mercilessly went viral on social media. The girl was walking in a local market with a young man when her father, Niyamat Ullah, and brother Haider Ali caught and beat her in public.
According to police, some residents recorded the video and informed the police, urging them to open an investigation into the matter.
The girl was reluctant to return home with family members but agreed after police intervention. According to villagers, the family beat Afreen mercilessly after returning home, leading to his death, police told PTI news agency.
Police say it was an honor killing and legal action is pending. A case has been registered against the victim's father and brother under Section 304 (murder not constituting murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
"A video has gone viral on Twitter and the police have opened an investigation. It looks like the minor was hastily buried," a senior police official told India Today.
