R Praggnanandhaa of India won the tiebreaker match against American GM Fabiano Caruana to advance to the FIDE World Cup final on Monday. The Indians defeated American GM Fabiano Caruana in the third game of the tiebreak to get to the final after the first two classical games on Saturday and Sunday and the first two rapid games on Monday ended in draws. Then, in the last tiebreaker game, he defeated Caruana to earn a place in the championship match against Magnus Carlsen!
After Viswanathan Anand, Praggnanandhaa is the first Indian to advance to the FIDE World Cup semifinals.
The 18-year-old Indian just advanced to the semifinals by defeating fellow countryman Arjun Erigaisi in a tense sudden-death blitz match after eight previous games ended in a tie.
Only Praggnanandhaa, one of the four Indians who advanced to the quarterfinals, is still competing.
