Former India smash Wasim Jaffer said Shubman Gill was a bit too defensive when opening the ball for India against the West Indies. The men in blue are all set to face the West Indies in the fourth T20I of a five-game series in Florida on August 12.
Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Jaffer said Gill was a bit too defensive in India's opener, adding that he could make a big difference if he got off to a good start. Gill struggled to score in the T20I series against the West Indies, picking up just 16 points in three games of the series.
“We talked about how important it is to start off well in power play and give players like Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma a good foundation. Jaiswal will attack with aggressive intent and I think Shubman Gill is a bit too defensive. If he gets two or three good throws right away, that can make a huge difference,” Jaffer said.
Speaking of Indian pacemaker Arshdeep Singh, Jaffer said the nimble left-handed pitcher will have to execute his game plan well as the fourth T20I tournament will take place on a high-scoring field. Arshdeep has won three hits in the first three games of the series.
“It is a high-scoring pitch and the execution has to be perfect. It seems Arshdeep is trying too many things but he can't make it. So even if he can block 2-3 limits at key stages, it can make a big difference in the game, so he's going to have to perform well." Jaffer added.
After losing the first two games and winning the third T20I with seven goals, India will look to level the five-game streak in Florida.
