Rumors abound about Samsung's potential venture into the realm of smart rings, with a speculated release date in 2024. The South Korean tech giant is purportedly working on a device called the Samsung Galaxy smart ring, which promises superior health-tracking capabilities compared to existing devices like smartwatches, and some even suggest it could eventually supplant them.
Reports also suggest that Samsung has sought trademarks for various names related to this rumored smart ring, including Galaxy One, Galaxy Pulse, and Galaxy Rhythm, though the company has yet to officially confirm the device's existence. Previously, it was reported that Samsung had trademarked other names like Galaxy Index, Galaxy Insight, and Galaxy Circle for the same device.
Amongst the swirl of speculations and reports regarding Samsung's potential foray into smart rings, a new tip has emerged suggesting that the company might unveil this innovative device at the 2024 Galaxy Unpacked event, where the Galaxy S24 series of smartphones is anticipated to make its debut. Noted tipster Ice Universe, in a Weibo post translated from Chinese, hints at the possibility of the smart ring becoming a star product at the event, which is tentatively scheduled for January next year. Some even conjecture that this ring could eventually replace Galaxy Watch models as the primary health-tracking device in Samsung's portfolio.
Earlier, a filing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) offered insights into the capabilities of the rumored Galaxy Ring, suggesting that it could gather, analyze, track, and transmit health, fitness, and sleep-related data. Moreover, it might monitor various aspects like "biometric and physiological data, vital signs, and personal health records" to provide medical guidance when needed. The inclusion of multiple sensors within the ring is expected to enhance the accuracy of health data.
Previously leaked designs of the Samsung Galaxy Ring hinted at a possible metallic finish, but as of now, no official information has been released by Samsung.
In parallel, Samsung's arch-rival, Apple, is also rumored to be exploring the smart ring market. Recent reports indicate that Apple has filed a patent titled "Ring Input Device With Pressure-Sensitive Input," which hints at innovative features for a smart ring.
This particular patent divulges the inner workings of the ring-shaped device, designed not only for delivering notification taps but also featuring controls on its exterior. It underscores the practicality of enhancing rings with additional capabilities, suggesting that electronic finger rings could discreetly serve as everyday communication devices, wirelessly connecting with other compatible devices due to their small size and regular wear.
Meanwhile, Indian brands such as BoAt and Noise have also begun exploring the emerging market for smart rings in the smart wearables segment. BoAt, for instance, recently launched its first smart ring with a range of health-tracking options. This device is offered in a single metallic silver color and is priced at INR 8,999 in India. In the global arena, brands like Oura have established a strong presence in the smart ring market.
