Once again, West Bengal Governor CV Anand Bose has raised criticisms against the state government led by Mamata Banerjee, following the swearing-in ceremony of Dhupguri MLA Nirmal Chandra Ray, who emerged victorious in a recent by-poll within his constituency.
In his remarks on this particular occasion, the Governor made a notable statement, suggesting, "Beyond the confines of Raj Bhavan, there exists turmoil, while within its precincts, a vigilant eye seems to be watching," alluding to concerns related to surveillance activities.
It is important to note that West Bengal has been marred by incidents of violence, particularly during the 2023 Bengal Panchayat elections, which regrettably resulted in several casualties. In recent times, the strained relationship between West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Governor CV Anand Bose has become quite evident.
Moreover, there have been discernible disparities between the Chief Minister and the Governor, encompassing disputes involving university appointments and the scheduling of meetings with vice-chancellors.
Governor Bose asserted, "The swearing-in ceremony has transpired somewhat belatedly, but it is better late than never. I can only remark that beyond the precincts of Raj Bhavan, where tumultuous events unfold, there exists a watchful gaze within the confines of Raj Bhavan."
Additionally, the Governor proclaimed that this particular day would be commemorated annually as "Self Respect Day" by Raj Bhavan. Furthermore, the establishment of the Babasaheb Ambedkar Award, comprising a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, along with a citation and a commemorative plaque, will serve as a tribute to individuals or institutions that have made significant contributions towards enhancing the well-being of the Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) communities.
He elaborated further, expressing, "This day marks a significant juncture at Raj Bhavan, and the swearing-in ceremony itself carries profound implications, underscoring its transformative significance. To commemorate this momentous occasion, it has been decided that Raj Bhavan will observe this day as 'Self Respect Day' annually. Additionally, the Babasaheb Ambedkar Award, encompassing a financial grant of Rs 1 lakh, an accompanying citation, and a commemorative plaque, will be instituted to recognize."
In response to the Governor's statement, Trinamool Congress senior leader and MLA Tapas Ray offered his perspective, stating, "I will refrain from offering extensive commentary on this matter. The Governor, as the constitutional head of West Bengal, holds a prominent role as per the constitution, presiding over this government. In light of these constitutional obligations, we hope that the Governor will diligently fulfill every constitutional duty, taking responsibility for the governance of the state."
