The United States authorities have maintained a close and continuous dialogue with their Canadian counterparts regarding the concerning allegations implicating the Indian government in the assassination of a Khalistani terrorist in Canada. A senior official from the State Department emphasized on Tuesday that they have been actively engaged in these discussions.
Expressing their deep concern over these allegations, the U.S. authorities have underscored the significance of a comprehensive and transparent inquiry into the matter. Moreover, they have urged the Indian government to actively participate and cooperate in facilitating this investigation, emphasizing the importance of an open and unbiased process, as stated during a press briefing held by the official.
The allegations regarding Indian government involvement in the murder of a Khalistani terrorist were prominently highlighted by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. He asserted that credible allegations were actively under investigation, suggesting a potential link between the agents of New Delhi and the aforementioned terrorist's assassination. In response to these allegations, India promptly dismissed them as 'absurd'.
This exchange of accusations has escalated tensions, further straining diplomatic relations that have already been deteriorating over the years. India has expressed its discontentment with Canada over the ongoing activities of Khalistani separatists within the Canadian territory. This recent episode threatens to extend its ramifications to trade relations, as negotiations concerning a proposed trade agreement were halted last week.
As a response to these developments, both countries resorted to a tit-for-tat expulsion of diplomats. Canada expelled India's top intelligence officer in its response, while New Delhi reciprocated by granting a Canadian diplomat a five-day period to leave the country.
