Dasun Shanaka, captain of Sri Lanka, claims that he anticipated Dunith Wellalage would take the initiative

In the recent clash between Sri Lanka and India on September 12, Dunith Wellalage emerged as the standout performer, despite Sri Lanka ultimately suffering a 42-run loss. This 20-year-old all-rounder made a significant impact by not only claiming 5 wickets against the formidable Indian team but also showcasing his batting prowess during the second innings against a strong Indian bowling attack. Wellalage, a left-hander, remained unbeaten, amassing 42 runs from 46 deliveries. Sri Lanka's innings concluded at 172 runs while chasing India's target of 214, captained by Rohit Sharma.

Wellalage's stellar performance earned him the prestigious Player of the Match award, a remarkable achievement even in the face of Sri Lanka's loss. This defeat complicated Sri Lanka's prospects of securing a spot in the Asia Cup 2023 final. Captain Dasun Shanaka expressed high praise for Wellalage and revealed that he had a premonition that the young player was destined for something extraordinary against India.

"Following our previous game against Bangladesh, I had a sense that Wellalage might deliver something exceptional. And he certainly did that today, not only making a significant batting contribution but also dismissing key figures like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma," Shanaka remarked following the game's conclusion.

Throughout the match, spin bowlers dominated the proceedings. Initially, Dunith Wellalage and Charith Asalanka combined to secure 9 crucial wickets for Sri Lanka, causing India to face adversity. Subsequently, Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav reciprocated by collectively capturing 6 wickets.

Shanaka also shared insights about the Colombo wicket, which started displaying significant spin characteristics from the 11th over of the first innings, contrary to their initial expectations of it being a batting-friendly pitch.

Wellalage played an instrumental role in exploiting the pitch's conditions for Sri Lanka. He dismantled the entire Indian top order, accounting for the dismissals of Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli in quick succession. Additionally, the spinner managed to secure the wickets of KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya, placing India in a precarious situation during a crucial stage of the match.

Sri Lanka's upcoming match against Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2023 is essentially a virtual semi-final, with the winner earning a coveted spot in the final.
