In Manipur, where protests persist despite nighttime curfews enforced by the authorities, the evening of September 29 witnessed a gathering of Meira Paibis, a women's social organization originating from various regions within the Khurai constituency of Imphal East district. These dedicated women took to the streets, equipped with torches, to voice their concerns.
Around 8:30 p.m., a public assembly was held on the premises of Khurai Popular High School. During this gathering, participants collectively addressed critical issues, including the fight against narco-terrorism and the pursuit of justice for two students who were allegedly brutally murdered by armed Kuki miscreants.
Meira Paibis representing both Lamlai and Khurai constituencies in Imphal East district converged at Khurai Popular High School under the banner of Manipur Awang Chingkhei Kanba Clubs and Meura Paibi Apunba Lup.
Subsequent to the public meeting, a rally commenced, with demonstrators marching toward Khurai-Lamlong in Imphal East district. However, the unwavering determination of this march was met with the intervention of security forces, who obstructed its progress.
According to police sources, the protesters had not obtained permission to conduct the rally due to the existing curfew. Nevertheless, driven by their emotions and convictions, they persisted with their demonstration, resulting in a standoff with security personnel.
The protesters were vociferously demanding justice for two students, namely Hijam Luwangbi Linthoingambi (17) and Phijam Hemanjit (20), who lost their lives in Manipur.
Their unwavering stance revolves around the apprehension of all those responsible for this heinous act, and they are urging the government to put an end to the violence that has plagued the state since May 3.
As tensions escalated, the protesters staunchly refused to vacate the area, leading the police to resort to tear gas and smoke bombs in their attempts to disperse the crowd. In response, the protesters utilized slingshots and projectiles. The protest continued until approximately 12:30 a.m. when security personnel finally managed to quell the agitation.
