Heinrich Klaasen scores 174 off 83 balls against Australia in the second-fastest ODI century by a South African batsman.

Heinrich Klaasen embarked on an extraordinary record-breaking journey, etching his name into the annals of ODI cricket history with an astounding performance that left the Australian bowlers reeling in a pivotal 4th ODI of a 5-match series, held at Centurion on the 15th of September. Klaasen's astonishing display saw him amass a remarkable 174 runs from a mere 83 deliveries, a stellar innings adorned with an impressive tally of 13 sixes and an equal number of boundaries.

Thanks to the Herculean efforts of Heinrich Klaasen, the South African team scaled new heights, notching up the highest-ever total in the history of One Day International (ODI) cricket at the revered SuperSport Park in Centurion, amassing an imposing score of 416 for the loss of 5 wickets in their allotted 50 overs.

The spectacle began with Heinrich Klaasen at 25 runs off 26 balls when the 32nd over concluded, and South Africa's total stood at 157 for the loss of 3 wickets. However, Klaasen, along with David Miller, embarked on a breathtaking spree of power-hitting in the ensuing 18 overs. This spellbinding performance saw the Proteas amass a staggering 259 runs during this period, leaving the Australian bowlers gasping for breath as they were subjected to a relentless assault.

Notably, Heinrich Klaasen's score of 174 ranks as the eighth-highest by a South African batsman in men's ODIs. Furthermore, his remarkable tally of 13 sixes places him second in the list of most sixes by a South African batter in ODIs, trailing only behind the legendary AB de Villiers, who amassed 16 sixes during a match against the West Indies in Johannesburg in 2015.

In an exceptional partnership, Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller combined forces to produce an awe-inspiring 222-run stand, and all of this was achieved in just 94 deliveries. This remarkable feat enabled South Africa to set a daunting target, as they sought to level the fiercely contested 5-match series.

Heinrich Klaasen's sensational form in the year 2023 has been nothing short of exceptional, with a tally of 521 runs from 10 matches, including two centuries and a half-century. An earlier highlight from Klaasen's impressive year was a scintillating 61-ball 119 not out against the West Indies in Potchefstroom in March 2023, where he reached his century in a mere 54 balls.

Amidst all the carnage that unfolded in Centurion, Australian bowler Adam Zampa bore the brunt, as he conceded a whopping 113 runs in his 10-over spell, thereby etching his name alongside the most expensive bowling spells in the history of ODI cricket.
