On Monday, Jagmeet Singh, a Canadian Member of Parliament of Indian origin, made a strong commitment to seek justice regarding the killing of Khalistani terrorist Harjeet Singh Nijjar, which occurred in Surrey in June. His statement, shared on social media, came shortly after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau asserted that there could be a "potential link" between agents of the Indian government and Nijjar's murder. Nijjar had been the leader of the banned Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF), and Trudeau's government responded by expelling a high-ranking Indian diplomat.
In response to these developments, India dismissed the allegations as "absurd" and "motivated" and, in a retaliatory measure, expelled a senior Canadian diplomat. Jagmeet Singh, a prominent Sikh leader, took to Twitter to express his determination, stating, "Today we learned of allegations that agents of the Indian Government murdered Hardeep Singh Nijjar - a Canadian killed on Canadian soil." He went on to assert, "I will leave no stone unturned in the pursuit of justice, including holding Narendra Modi accountable."
Some social media users pointed out various aspects of the situation, with one user noting that Jagmeet Singh appeared to be concealing replies to his tweet in which he threatened Indian Prime Minister Modi. Others raised concerns about Jagmeet Singh's connections to Khalistani extremists and highlighted the condemnation of Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau by Indian media outlets for echoing Khalistani propaganda.
Another individual questioned the approach to the investigation into Nijjar's killing, highlighting the potential consequences of prematurely targeting the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi. They raised concerns about the integrity of the investigation's findings if it was influenced by the public statements made by Trudeau and Jagmeet Singh.
It's worth noting that Justin Trudeau's Liberal Party's minority government relies on the support of the New Democratic Party (NDP), led by Jagmeet Singh, following the 2021 election. Singh has previously expressed support for Khalistani separatists and has spoken out against the police action involving Amritpal Singh, a Khalistani separatist who was arrested in Punjab in April after evading capture for over a month.
