On Thursday, a member of the ruling party in Parliament made offensive comments directed at Kunwar Danish Ali, a legislator from the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) who is a Muslim. During a discussion on India's moon mission Chandraayan-3, the BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri used derogatory language, referring to Danish Ali as a "terrorist," a "militant," and even a "pimp."
A video shared on social media showed Ramesh Bidhuri shouting at Danish Ali in Hindi, with two other BJP MPs and former ministers, Ravi Shankar Prasad and Harsh Vardhan, seemingly enjoying the situation and making jokes while Bidhuri continued with his offensive remarks. Bidhuri went as far as calling Danish Ali a "mullah" and continued his hateful rant despite the Chair, held by Congress MP Kodikunnil Suresh, urging him to stop.
These derogatory comments from Bidhuri stemmed from remarks made by Danish Ali earlier, where he referred to a statement by IIT-Mandi Director Laxmidhar Behera, who claimed that landslides and cloudbursts in Himachal Pradesh were linked to people consuming meat. Bidhuri's comments drew criticism from the public, including journalist Shivam Kumar, who called on Om Birla to take action against the MP, warning that failure to do so would tarnish the dignity of the Speaker's position.
In response, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla expressed serious concern about Bidhuri's objectionable remarks and cautioned him about facing strict consequences if such behavior continued. Union Defence Minister and Deputy Leader of the Lok Sabha Rajnath Singh expressed regret for Bidhuri's comments, stating that he had not heard exactly what was said.
The Congress party strongly objected to Bidhuri's remarks and demanded his suspension from the House, considering them an insult to all MPs. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh dismissed the apology offered by Union Minister Rajnath Singh as inadequate and insisted that strict action be taken against Bidhuri.
