The Congress party warmly welcomed the reports indicating that the Union Cabinet has given the green light for the women's reservation bill to be presented in the Lok Sabha. Nonetheless, the party made it clear that they would withhold their final judgment until they received more details about the proposed bill.
In a post on X, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh expressed his satisfaction, stating, "The Congress party has long advocated for the implementation of women's reservation, and we are pleased with the reported decision of the Union Cabinet. We eagerly anticipate the specifics of the Bill."
Additionally, Ramesh pointed out that this matter could have been effectively addressed during the all-party meeting preceding the Special Session, with a potential consensus achieved, rather than operating under a shroud of secrecy.
Ramesh also shared an extensive post he made on Sunday to emphasize the Congress party's longstanding support for this initiative.
Amidst the ongoing speculation surrounding the bill's clearance, K Kavitha, a leader of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), remarked, "Every television channel is reporting the approval of the women's reservation, although there has been no official announcement from the Cabinet as yet."
Kavitha expressed her concern, stating, "There could be a discrepancy between what is said and what actually transpires," while adding, "My primary concern is that the government should strive to build a consensus."
The bill secures a 33 per cent quota for women in both the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. Several leaders from various political backgrounds have voiced their support for introducing this significant legislation.
Nonetheless, an official announcement regarding the bill remains pending, as the government deviated from its customary practice of holding a press briefing following the Cabinet meeting.
