Over the course of the last week, a distressing string of tiger fatalities, totaling seven, has unfolded across various states in India. This disheartening trend includes the loss of five vulnerable cubs and one adult tiger, all under different circumstances. These deeply concerning occurrences have prompted forest officials to initiate thorough investigations into the circumstances surrounding these tragic incidents.
In Kanpur Zoo, located in Uttar Pradesh, the somber news emerged of the passing of an ailing tigress named Trisha due to an extended period of illness. Trisha, who had been residing in Kanpur since 2010, had notably given birth to 14 cubs within the confines of the zoo. Unfortunately, her health took a turn for the worse in December of the previous year, necessitating her transfer to a hospital situated within the zoological park for treatment. Trisha's demise represents a significant loss for the zoo and conservation efforts.
Meanwhile, another disheartening discovery was made in Chandrapur, Maharashtra, where the lifeless body of a tigress was found in a field. The precise cause of her untimely demise remains under investigation. Preliminary estimations suggest that the tigress was approximately two and a half years old.
Tragically, this incident occurred just five days after the tragic and inexplicable deaths of three tiger cubs in the same region. Within the Ballarpur forest range, two tiger cubs were discovered lifeless, while a third cub, in a dire state of health, was promptly transported for urgent medical attention. Regrettably, the third cub's condition deteriorated, leading to its unfortunate demise. These cubs, believed to be around 5 months old, had been tragically separated from their mother, potentially succumbing to the ravages of hunger.
Adding to this distressing sequence of events, the prior week witnessed the unfortunate passing of two tiger cubs within a mere two-day interval at the Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan. Forest officials stumbled upon one of these cubs during their routine patrols. Tragically, the cub's frailty proved insurmountable, and it passed away before it could receive the necessary medical care. Much like the previous cases, these cubs had been separated from their maternal care, prompting ongoing search efforts to locate their mother and establish her well-being.
These deeply troubling incidents have raised significant concerns about the welfare of India's tiger population, emphasizing the urgency of conservation efforts and safeguarding these majestic creatures.
