Congress Member of Parliament (MP) Shashi Tharoor has extended his congratulations to the G20 team for successfully adopting the New Delhi Declaration during the G20 Summit, highlighting it as a commendable achievement. He specifically commended G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant, emphasizing the challenges inherent in achieving such a diplomatic deal, a feat that appeared nearly impossible.
In a virtual conversation discussing the G20 Summit's outcomes, Tharoor expressed his appreciation, acknowledging his engagement with both Amitabh Kant, the G20 Sherpa, and India's Foreign Minister, S Jaishankar. He underscored the significance of their efforts and lauded their dedication.
Tharoor recognized the adoption of the New Delhi Leaders' Summit Declaration with a unanimous consensus on the opening day of the G20 Summit as a monumental achievement for India during its G20 presidency.
Drawing attention to the Sherpa negotiations, which presented considerable difficulties in reaching a consensus, Tharoor commented on the impressive nature of this achievement, particularly in the context of the Ukraine crisis, which had initially appeared insurmountable. He noted that for nine months, the task had seemed exceedingly challenging, making the ultimate success even more noteworthy.
Tharoor went on to praise the individuals, led by Amitabh Kant and S Jaishankar, who had worked diligently to achieve this outcome, emphasizing the impressiveness of their accomplishments.
Amitabh Kant, the key figure behind the Delhi Declaration, also expressed his congratulations to the team upon its adoption. He underscored the challenge of achieving consensus on the "geopolitical paras," referring to the phrasing of the Ukraine crisis, which had been a significant point of contention. Kant highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership in the contemporary world, which played a pivotal role in securing this consensus.
This achievement positioned G20 India as "the most ambitious in the history of G20 presidencies," according to Kant. The government additionally celebrated the New Delhi Leaders Declaration for its "huge India narrative" and significant India footprint.
The G20 faced deep divisions regarding the Ukraine conflict, with Western nations advocating for a strong condemnation of Russia in the Leaders' Declaration, while others emphasized a focus on broader economic matters. Despite these divisions, the Delhi Declaration was successfully adopted with a unanimous consensus, showcasing the effectiveness of India's diplomacy during its G20 presidency.
