The governor of West Bengal introduces the SPEED program for quicker university decisions

Amid the ongoing conflict between the West Bengal Governor and the government led by Mamata Banerjee, CV Ananda Bose initiated the implementation of the SPEED (Simplified Procedure for Easy and Effective Decision) program in West Bengal universities on Tuesday.

The primary objective of the SPEED program is to expedite the decision-making process within the university system in West Bengal. In conjunction with this initiative, Bose, who holds the position of Chancellor in the universities, has issued directives for the establishment of 25 teacher selection committees and a Vice Chancellor committee.

The establishment of the Vice Chancellor Committee serves the purpose of identifying areas where there is a backlog in university administration and formulating strategies for the revitalization and enhancement of the university system.

Furthermore, a Real-time Monitoring Cell has been established at the Raj Bhavan to facilitate concurrent evaluation and oversight.

It is worth noting that the Governor, Ananda Bose, and the Trinamool Congress government have been embroiled in a contentious dispute concerning the governance and control of universities in the state.

The dispute reached new heights last week when the state's Education Minister, Bratya Basu, referred to the Governor as the 'new vampire in town.' Subsequently, the Governor dispatched two letters, one to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and another to authorities in Delhi, in what has been described as a 'midnight action.'

Both the Governor and Chief Minister Banerjee have refrained from disclosing the contents of these letters thus far.

The Governor's recent decision to establish selection committees responsible for appointing Vice Chancellors at multiple universities has also drawn sharp criticism from the government.
