The Tamil Nadu government is set to unveil a groundbreaking monthly financial assistance initiative designed exclusively for women who are the primary breadwinners of their families. This momentous occasion is scheduled to take place on the birth anniversary of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) founder CN Annadurai.
In an unprecedented move, eligible women heading households will be the beneficiaries of a monthly sum of Rs 1,000, which will be directly deposited into their bank accounts as part of the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thittam, also known as the Kalaignar Women Entitlement Scheme.
The official launch of this program will be conducted by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin, in Kancheepuram, a place of historical significance as it happens to be the birthplace of CN Annadurai. It is worth noting that this initiative was one of the key electoral promises made by the DMK during its campaign.
The state budget for this fiscal year allocated an impressive sum of Rs 7,000 crore to fund this scheme, marking it as the most substantial expenditure on social welfare undertaken by the Tamil Nadu government.
As reported by state authorities, an astounding 1.63 crore applications were received for this program. Following a rigorous verification process, approximately 1.06 crore women have met the eligibility criteria and have thus been shortlisted as beneficiaries.
