Amidst the escalating tensions between Israel and Palestine, a group of 27 individuals from Meghalaya faced an unexpected and perilous situation. These 27 citizens from Meghalaya were caught in Israel when it came under attack by Hamas terrorists on Saturday. They found themselves stranded in Bethlehem, Jerusalem, as a result of this conflict.
In response to this challenging situation, the government of Meghalaya has been diligently collaborating with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to ensure the safe passage of these stranded citizens. The well-being and security of these individuals from Meghalaya have been a paramount concern for both the state government and the MEA.
In an encouraging update shared by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on X (formerly known as Twitter), it was revealed that these 27 citizens, who had been stuck in the war-torn zone encompassing Israel and Palestine, managed to successfully cross the border into Egypt on Sunday. This significant development is a testament to the collaborative efforts and determination exhibited by the MEA, the Indian mission, and the Meghalaya government.
The group, which included prominent figures such as Rajya Sabha MP Dr. WR Kharluki and his family, initially embarked on a sacred pilgrimage to Jerusalem. However, their journey took an unexpected turn as they became ensnared in the crossfire of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine.
The situation in the region has been highly volatile, with Hamas initiating a military operation against Israel, resulting in a barrage of missile attacks from the Gaza Strip. These attacks have tragically led to a substantial loss of life and numerous injuries in Israel, with the death toll exceeding 600 and the number of injured surpassing 2,000 individuals. In response to the rocket strikes launched by Hamas, Israel retaliated with its own military offensive on the same day, resulting in the loss of lives among Palestinians.
Furthermore, Israeli airstrikes in Gaza have targeted not only military installations but also residential buildings, including structures like the Watan Tower in Gaza City, the Al-Aklouk Tower, and the Matar residential building. These developments have underscored the gravity of the situation and the urgency of ensuring the safety of all individuals, including those from Meghalaya, who have been impacted by the conflict.
