Union Minister Piyush Goyal expressed deep concern on Wednesday over senior leader Sharad Pawar's statements regarding India's stance on a recent terror attack in Israel. Goyal found it "very disturbing" when a prominent figure like Sharad Pawar made what he referred to as "preposterous statements" regarding India's position on the issue.
This response by Goyal came after Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Chief Sharad Pawar had declared on Sunday that India had consistently supported the cause of Palestine. On his official social media platform, Goyal articulated his thoughts, emphasizing the necessity of condemning terrorism in all its forms across the globe. He expressed disappointment that an individual who has held significant positions such as India's Defense Minister and Chief Minister on multiple occasions holds such a seemingly nonchalant perspective on matters related to terrorism.
Goyal pointed out that Sharad Pawar had been part of the same government that exhibited empathy during the Batla House encounter while terrorist attacks were transpiring on Indian soil.
Goyal called for a change in this mindset, emphasizing that he hopes Sharad Pawar will now prioritize the interests of the nation above all else. Sharad Pawar's initial remarks were made during an address to a gathering of NCP workers in Mumbai, where he indicated that former Prime Ministers of India had consistently supported Palestine. Pawar expressed concern that, for the first time, the current Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, had aligned with Israel, seemingly overlooking what Pawar considered the "real issue" in the region. Pawar stressed the importance of clarity in the NCP's stance, asserting that they stand with the people who originally inhabited that land.
These statements by Sharad Pawar came shortly after Prime Minister Modi had expressed solidarity with Israel and denounced the terrorist actions of Hamas.
