After the Bengaluru fire, Karnataka bans fireworks at political rallies and festivals

In response to the tragic incident at a cracker storage and retail facility in the border town of Attibele, located in Bengaluru Urban district, where 14 lives were lost, the Karnataka government, led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, has taken several measures and implemented new regulations.

One significant step taken by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is the prohibition of firecrackers during various events and occasions, including political functions, rallies, festivals, and weddings. He emphasized that this decision is a response to the recent disaster and is aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future. The ban on firecrackers during these events aligns with the guidelines set by the Supreme Court, particularly concerning the use of environmentally friendly "green crackers." The chief minister emphasized that strict action should be taken against those who fail to adhere to these guidelines.

Furthermore, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has directed all relevant authorities to ensure compliance with the Explosives Act and the Supreme Court's guidelines regarding the use of green crackers. This directive aims to enhance safety measures and minimize the risk associated with the storage and use of fireworks.

Deputy Chief Minister Shivakumar echoed the sentiments of the chief minister, emphasizing that going forward, only green crackers will be allowed in the state. This decision is driven by the desire to mitigate pollution and prevent damage to vehicles. It will be enforced during processions and the Diwali festival, among other events.

In addition to these preventive measures, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has taken disciplinary action by suspending three officials in connection with the Attibele incident. The suspended individuals include Anekal Tahsildar, a local police inspector, and the regional fire officer. Additionally, notices have been issued to the Deputy Commissioner of Bengaluru Urban District, who granted the license to the cracker shop owner, and the Superintendent of Police. These notices seek explanations regarding their roles and responsibilities in the incident, which also resulted in three individuals sustaining critical injuries.

The cracker storage facility in Attibele had stocked fireworks in preparation for the upcoming Dasara and Deepavali festivals.
