Agra: Two people were given life sentences for the 2007 lynching of a Dalit man


An Agra court, on Monday, handed down life imprisonment sentences to two individuals and further imposed a financial penalty of Rs 10,000 in connection with the alleged lynching of a Dalit man that occurred over 15 years ago in the Shahganj area of Agra.

According to Agra DCP, Suraj Rai, who spoke with IndiaToday., the incident dates back to 2007 and involved Pappu, also known as Pratap Singh, who worked as a bicycle mechanic. It was during this time that a dispute arose between Pappu and three individuals.

In a fit of anger, the three culprits violently assaulted Pappu, inflicting severe injuries that ultimately led to his hospitalization. Tragically, Pappu's injuries proved fatal, and he passed away during the course of his medical treatment.

Suraj Rai went on to explain that the Shahganj police in Agra promptly took action against all three accused, charging them with murder. The case was diligently monitored by the authorities, with both the monitoring cell and the police station continuously following up on its progress. Subsequently, two of the three accused were found guilty and sentenced, while the third individual was acquitted due to a lack of compelling evidence.
