Arindam Bagchi, who has been serving as the spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, has been designated as India's permanent representative to the United Nations (UN) and other international organizations based in Geneva. This appointment comes as Bagchi's next significant role, following his effective role as the MEA spokesperson, where he capably managed numerous critical issues, including the border dispute in eastern Ladakh, India's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and New Delhi's presidency of the G20.
In his new role in Geneva, Bagchi will succeed Indra Mani Pandey, who is scheduled to return to New Delhi. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) officially announced this appointment, stating, "Arindam Bagchi (IFS:1995), presently Additional Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, has been appointed as the next Ambassador/Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations and other International Organisations in Geneva." He is expected to commence his new assignment shortly.
Reports suggest that the MEA is currently considering several senior diplomats for the role of spokesperson, including Nagaraj Naidu Kakanur, the Joint Secretary for G20, and K. Nandini Singla, the High Commissioner to Mauritius. Prior to his current appointment, Bagchi held diplomatic positions such as Ambassador to Croatia and Deputy High Commissioner to Sri Lanka. He has also served as a director in the Prime Minister's Office and worked at India's permanent mission at the UN in New York.
