Army officer vanishes from the infantry school in Madhya Pradesh; investigation started

A young Army officer, Lt Mohit Gupta, who was in the midst of his training at the Infantry School located in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh, has been reported as missing, according to information provided by the police on Sunday.

The incident prompted the registration of a missing person's report at the Mhow police station, situated in the Indore district. Deepak Rathore, the acting station house officer of the Mhow police station, confirmed this development to PTI.

Based on preliminary investigations, it has been determined that Lt Mohit Gupta was last seen at 6 a.m. on Friday. Typically, all officers and personnel of various ranks are required to participate in the Physical Training (PT) session scheduled for 6 a.m. However, on that particular day, he was notably absent. In response to his absence, his instructors instructed his coursemates to check if he was unwell.

Subsequently, at around 7.30 a.m., his room was inspected, and upon not finding him there, the authorities were alerted to his disappearance. As a result, a formal complaint was lodged with the police.

According to Rathore, the Infantry School authorities have supplied the police with the missing officer's mobile number and permanent address. Unfortunately, his mobile phone was switched off at the time.

Family members of Lt Gupta, who reside in the Srinagar locality of Etah city in Uttar Pradesh, have been informed about his disappearance. Authorities have also initiated the process of obtaining his call detail record (CDR) to ascertain who he had been in contact with.

The case was officially registered based on a written complaint submitted by Subedar Jarmal Singh, who serves as an instructor at the Young Officers wing of the Infantry School. Subsequently, the Mhow police launched an investigation into the matter.

According to sources, Lt Gupta was last seen wearing his PT uniform and vanished between 6 am and 7.30 am from his room, which was situated within the Young Officers' accommodation near Walong Dwar on the side of Mall Road in Mhow. He left his motorcycle at the location, leading to the presumption that he had left on foot.

Strict rules govern the movements of officers and other rank personnel attending in-service courses at the Infantry School. Typically, they are not permitted to exit the campus, as all essential amenities and shops operated by civilian contractors are conveniently located within the campus to discourage trainees from venturing outside. In cases where it is deemed necessary to leave the campus, individuals are required to obtain an outpass endorsed by the appropriate authority. The Defence Security Corps (DSC) personnel stationed at all entry points only grant exit permission after verifying the validity of the passes.
