Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader expressed his concern on Thursday about what he viewed as the Centre's practice of levying "false charges" against his party members, particularly in light of the recent arrest of AAP leader Sanjay Singh in connection with the Delhi liquor policy case.
Kejriwal addressed reporters and voiced his apprehensions, saying, "They are simply filing baseless charges. Investigations are not yielding any results. This is a waste of time for the investigative agencies. The country cannot progress by unfairly accusing individuals."
In response to questions regarding the remarks made by the Supreme Court during AAP leader Manish Sisodia's bail hearing, Arvind Kejriwal suggested that the top court's comments implied that the case lacked merit.
During the bail hearing, the Supreme Court had posed tough questions to the central agencies investigating the Delhi liquor policy case, demanding evidence to support their allegations against Manish Sisodia.
In a significant observation, the Supreme Court questioned Manish Sisodia's involvement in the 'South Group' or liquor lobby conversations and expressed bewilderment over how the agencies had named him as an accused in a money laundering case.
"Manish Sisodia does not appear to be involved. Vijay Nair is implicated, but not Manish Sisodia. How do you intend to implicate him under the Money Laundering Act? The money is not flowing to him," the apex court remarked.
Regarding Sanjay Singh's arrest, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted a raid at his residence in connection with the excise policy case and subsequently took him into custody after a 10-hour interrogation on Wednesday.
Sanjay Singh is the second prominent AAP leader, after Manish Sisodia, to be arrested in relation to the money laundering case associated with the alleged Delhi excise policy irregularities. Another AAP member, Satyendar Jain, is also in custody in connection with a separate money laundering case.
On the day of Sanjay Singh's arrest, Arvind Kejriwal asserted that more opposition leaders could face arrest in the run-up to the 2024 general elections.
In a post on X, Kejriwal remarked, "Sanjay Singh's arrest is completely unlawful. This reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi's anxiety. They will apprehend numerous additional opposition leaders before the elections."
